Logistop organised Logistalks: Towards a smart and efficient port.

At the online event Logistalks: Towards a smart and efficient port, organised by Logistop in the framework of the Port Logistics Working Group, leading experts from the port sector explored the key strategies and technologies to transform ports into digitised and sustainable ecosystems. Moderated by José Andrés Giménez, Vice President for R&D&I and Head of Innovation of Port Logistics Working Group of Logistop, and Director of Port Logistics at the Valenciaport Foundation, this event brought together leaders such as Fernando Arjona Villén, Head of the Information Technology and Innovation Division at the Port Authority of Malaga, Ana Llorens, Director of Operations at Portsur Castellón, and Jorge Pérez Navarrete, Manager of Zausan. In their speeches, they analysed the advances, challenges and benefits of smart ports for the operational efficiency, sustainability and security of port facilities.

Hacia un puerto inteligente y eficiente

The pillars of a smart port

Fernando Arjona Villén (Port Authority of Malaga), stressed that being a smart port involves more than implementing technology. It is about applying technological solutions in critical areas such as sustainability, customer experience, interoperability and security. The transition to smart ports allows for a more efficient and transparent operation, reducing environmental impact and improving security. In addition, Arjona gave a complete overview of the projects they are working on with the aim of moving towards a smart port.

Sustainability and digitalisation

Ana Llorens (Portsur Castellón), presented the Nextport strategic project, based on sustainability and digitalisation. According to Llorens, the objective is to develop a logistics platform that allows control of all the actors and parameters involved with the aim of improving decision-making in real time and improving operational efficiency. He also detailed examples of how technologies and the smart port concept can be focused on the environmental control of activities.

Efficiency and flexibility

For Jorge Pérez Navarrete (Zausan), the port must be ‘elastic,’ capable of adapting to the demands of a changing logistics environment, readjusting as quickly and efficiently as possible to new scenarios. With this vision, Zausan has implemented optimisation projects in the ports of Valencia, Sagunto, and Gandía. Pérez underlined the importance of measuring current parameters and proposing improvements based on AI, digital twins and other technologies which, despite being somewhat hackneyed concepts, need to be applied.

To conclude the event, José Andrés Giménez closed the event by emphasising the importance of collaboration between all stakeholders in the port ecosystem to achieve an innovation-oriented future. The path towards smart ports requires the joint effort of institutions, companies and professionals to ensure that the logistics sector moves towards a more sustainable, efficient and secure future.
